We had a great morning with students from the Catholic University of America and President and Mrs. Garvey, who joined us for a service day honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Referencing the words of Dr. Alveda King, Martin Luther King’s niece and a staunch pro-life advocate, we chose to spend the morning working on a pro-life project in preparation for next week’s annual March for life.

In numerous appearances Alveda King has cited the words of her famous uncle, “The Negro cannot win if he is willing to sacrifice the future of his children for immediate personal comfort and safety.” Referring to her own abortions before her conversion, she readily admits, “I realized that I was violating the civil rights of a person.”

These words served as an introduction to the morning, along with our music video, Every Human Life Is Sacred, and then the group worked with our Residents to craft beaded crosses that will be given to high school students scheduled to visit the home next week in the days surrounding the March for Life. Everyone worked so well together, and enjoyed one another’s company at the same time. The students were stellar in their attentiveness to each Resident as they worked together one-on-one. It was a great, life-affirming morning! Thank you, CUA friends!

Getting started…
Many hands make fast work and lots of crosses!
President Garvey with Shirley.

A pretty intense moment.
Mrs. Garvey with Dorothy, hard at work.
The finished product!

Another team hard at work.
Some kitchen inventory work also took place.
Hard at work sorting donated canned goods.
